So last night, the Rolling Stones stole a page out of U2's book with their large catwalk performance at the Super Bowl half-time show.
I personally am not a huge Stones fan when it comes to their live show. It leaves me wanting.
Mick Jagger sounds like he's just saying the words and not singing them. As if he's out of breath from all his arm flailing about.
But I thought about the biggest half-time shows in recent years and I do believe U2 tops them all, with Paul McCartney coming in a close second and the Stones third.
As NPR pointed out this morning, why is halftime at America's biggest event of the year headlined by non-American bands?
Is there an American band who can even compete?
Is there even an American super group like U2, the Stones or the Beatles?
Is it because American music is more focused on solo-acts?
The closest supergroup I can come up with is the Eagles - but I can't see them rocking out at the Superbowl.
Green Day did ok at the opening game of the season, but they don't have the mass appeal of the fore-mentioned bands.
If you got to pick next year's half-time show performer, who would it be and why?
And anyone who votes for Brittney Spears is automatically disqualified (just because I can).

hey dude...saw your comment about the Super Bowl 1/2 time show...what about Aerosmith? Boston band...they did Super Bowl XXXV...in fact with the exception of Paul, U2, Phil Collins, and The Stones...pretty much all of the other shows were American bands and artists.
I would say The Foo Fighters would be an awesome show too.
Aerosmith would be a great band and I can't remember if they ever did a superbowl or not.
That would probably be America's top superband... but still not the mass appeal as U2 or the Stones.
Foo Fighters don't have anywhere near the appeal as the other bands.
Well if ya don't approve of The Foo Fighters (Nirvana shaped a lot of bands today)...as a great American band..what about Lynyrd Skynyrd for mass appeal..Tom Petty, ZZ TOP, KISS, Dave Matthews, Jimmy Buffet, or THE DOORS 21ST CENTURY. Aerosmith did Super Bowl XXXV with Britney Spears. Too bad Van Halen isn't together...maybe you could stick Sammy Hagar up there. Of course the list would go on and on for American country artists with mass appeal.
It's not that I don't approve of Foo Fighters - it's that they don't have the MASS appeal of Rolling Stones or Beatles or U2. There's never been a Foomania. They have to combine acts to get the star power of these other bands. Dave Matthews has a huge appeal, but they're not a "rockin'" band like the others.
ZZ Top, Kiss, The Doors and many others were big in their day, but that's mainly a generational deal.
